You’ve invested in a pair of Titan Grip Men’s Slides or premium leather loafers. You clean them, you polish them, but you leave them sitting on the floor empty when you aren’t wearing them. This is the single biggest mistake in shoe care. The environment inside your shoe is harsh. Throughout the day, your feet produce heat and sweat—even if you don’t feel it. Leather is porous and absorbs this moisture. If left to dry naturally while the shoe is empty, the leather shrinks and warps as it dries [Source: 569].
The Magic of Cedar
A shoe tree does two vital things. First, it acts as a structural skeleton. By inserting a tree immediately after taking your shoes off, you force the leather back into its original shape while it is still warm and pliable. This creates tension that smoothes out creases before they become permanent wrinkles [Source: 510].
Second, and perhaps most importantly, is the material. We highly recommend unfinished cedar wood shoe trees. Cedar is naturally absorbent. It wicks moisture out of the leather lining and into the wood, preventing the leather from rotting or developing odors. Plastic shoe trees can hold shape, but they trap moisture inside, which can actually accelerate damage.
Rotation is Key
Using shoe trees also supports the practice of shoe rotation. You should avoid wearing the same pair of leather shoes two days in a row. They need at least 24 hours with a shoe tree inserted to fully dry out and recover their structure. By rotating your footwear and using trees, you can effectively double the lifespan of your purchase.
